Wherever Jay Hulser of Kalona, IA rides; people always comment that he has “one sweet ride”. The name has stuck to his heavily customized ’03 Road King. However, in the pursuit of perfection, Jay will never finish customizing his Sweet Ride.
By 2003, all of the bugs had been worked out of the Twin Cam 88 motor. Dave Royeson at Interstate Junction did the rebuild on Jay’s motor. Dave bumped it up to 96” and used Keith Black forged pistons in the process. The heads were ported and flowed, and large Kibblewhite valves were installed. A Mikuni 45mm flat-slide carburetor handles the air/fuel mixture. A Thunderheader 2-into-1 exhaust system improves low and mid-range torque. Don’t worry you are not seeing things; the tailpipe on the left side is a falsie. The cams were upgraded with a set from S&S to help Sweet Ride reach the 100-horsepower mark.
The stock wheels were swapped out with a set of 18” Xtreme Machine Speedstars. Jay now runs a single brake up front with a matching Xtreme Machine rotor. SLC Fabrications custom built a rear tire kit for Jay so his Bagger could house a 180mm rear tire. The stock rear fender was split in half and widened to accommodate the bigger tire. A Russ Wernimont Designs license plate mount and taillight now reside on the custom rear fender.
The handlebars are 16” ape hangers with Battistinis grips installed. The matching floorboards and foot controls are also from Battistinis. JH Choppers custom built the flamed dash cover. To give the Bagger a perfect stance, the rear was lowered by an inch and a half. Curt Bacon applied the House of Kolor custom blend of orange and black paint, as well as the airbrushed flames and silver tribal graphics.
If you are riding near Kalona, IA and run into Jay, make sure you let him know how much you appreciate his Sweet Ride!
